| The soul of the Crescent City
SOUTH BEND -- In the liner notes to his album "Oh, My Nola," Harry Connick Jr. writes that Allen Toussaint was prophetic when he wrote "Yes We Can Can." " 'Yes We Can' perfectly fit the bill of a post-Katrina New Orleans," the pianist writes. "This should be the theme song of our great city." The Crescent City could hardly ask for a better standard-bearer than Connick, or a more personal one. With the vocal album "Oh, My Nola" and the mostly instrumental album "Chanson du Vieux Carré," which Connick released simultaneously on Jan. 30, the New Orleans native makes a convincing and soulful bid to keep the music, spirit and life of his hometown alive. .
A veteran punk band: New Pants
There's a Chinese saying, a new one, that "If you choose to be a rock musician, you're choosing to be broke". Through the ups and downs of 20-years of Chinese rock and roll, many tried their luck and moved on. But not "New Pants", that's "New Trousers" for our English viewers. Comprising of three guys from Beijing, they're still rattling out the sounds their fans like to hear after 10 years in the game. The song "You Are My Superstar" was the first hit from the pants' fourth album, "Dragon Tiger Panacea," released last October. After a four years hiatus, and weird title aside, the record is their best seller to date. The new album mixes vintage 80s' new wave with disco. Peng Lei, vocal and guitar, said, "I think this album gives many young people a brand new concept.
SanDisk Sansa Connect
Announced at CES earlier this year, SanDisk's Wi-Fi-equipped MP3 player has arrived, and I've been playing around with it for a while now. The first thing that struck me about this 4GB player is that its Wi-Fi capabilities are actually useful. The Sansa Connect gives you many more sharing options than Microsoft's Zune does, all of them built around a partnership with Yahoo. Find an open access point, and you can stream Internet radio from Launchcast stations or browse Flickr photo streams. Sign up for Yahoo's portable music subscription service, Yahoo Music Unlimited To Go (US$12 per month for an annual subscription, or $15 if you go month-to-month), and you'll be able to download individual tracks or albums of your choice over Wi-Fi. I'd still like to have the option of syncing wirelessly with my PC, but the streaming radio is a very nice touch.
Lily Allen Reacts Poorly to Teasing, New Police Material Needs ...
Every other morning we wake up to another series of cheeky remarks made by Lily Allen to some reporter. But it turns out that, when it's aimed at her, Allen can't handle even a little snark. "LDN Is A Victim," a hilarious send-up of London scenesters pokes fun at a slew of artists (including The Streets and Lily Allen) for being, essentially, middle class posers masquerading as gritty underground kids. Sample lyric: "This is a middle class art school thing yeah? So put on your common accents and let's all sing." Ever the eager MySpacer, Allen posted on the as-of-yet-undisclosed composer's MySpace page. She wrote:"So what if we're middle class? Just cause your mum was too lazy to get her fat ass off the sofa and make some cash. I shouldn't be able to make tunes yeah? (Which is more than you're doing by the way)." How do you say 'pansy' in British hipster slang? It's looking increasingly likely that those of us who take out a second mortgage in order to see the Police this summer will be treated to a gloriously old school set.
Trying to get Wolfowitz through the door
WITH pressure mounting on Paul Wolfowitz to resign, the World Bank president has done what any embattled political figure would do hire the best legal advice available. Wolfowitz is under investigation for ordering the World Bank's human resources department to give his girlfriend, 52-year-old Shaha Riza, a transfer and a pay raise. The bank's rules prohibit one partner from reporting to another, even indirectly, so Riza had to leave before Wolfowitz could take on the presidency. Riza ended up at the State Department Wolfowitz's old employer and was given a 36 per cent pay increase. Her new tax-free salary of $US193,000 ($A230,000) is more than that of Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice. A day after a probe into the matter was announced, Wolfowitz hired lawyer Robert Bennett.
SanDisk teaming up with Yahoo's music division, pairing MP3 with ...
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Flash memory maker SanDisk Corp. said Monday it will pair its new wireless music player with free and subscription music services from Yahoo Inc. Users of the Sansa Connect device will be able to use a Wi-Fi wireless connection to listen to Launchcast Internet radio, browse Flickr photos and see what Yahoo Messenger friends and other Sansa Connect owners nearby are listening to. Launchcast and Flickr are both part of the Yahoo network. Sansa Connect users with a Yahoo Music Unlimited To Go subscription also can download music and listen to or download tracks their friends are listening to or have recommended. Apple Inc.'s iPod continues to dominate the portable music player market with a more than 70 per cent share while SanDisk has risen over the past few years to rank second with about a 10 per cent slice of the market, according to market researcher NPD Group.
