Drag show packs the house

Tight, flashy costumes, high heels, loud music and glitter — the MSU Drag Show was glam rock at its finest.

The event was sponsored by the University Activities Board and Respecting Individuals on Neutral Ground as a part of Pride Week, which highlights the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Most participants perform as members of the opposite sex, while lip-synching and dancing to popular music from many genres.

Dressed in a glittery gold evening gown, Hershae Chocolatae opened the show performing songs by Tina Turner and Macy Gray.

Premedical and nutritional sciences senior Eric Harper specifically came to the show to see his friend, performing on stage as Moltyn Decadence, but thought Chocolatae did a great job.

"I love the host," Harper said.

DRUMS

Drummer Ken Brashears Virtual Drum Kit (www.kenbrashear.com) can be played by clicking on its parts with your computer mouse or by toggling a display showing letters and using your computer keyboard (best for drum rolls). Click on the mixer to see a list of the instruments used and to hear a sample of Brashears playing. He explains in his bio at his bands website (www.bobbleheadband.com) how he adapted his set for a left-hand lead after injuring his right hand. Theres also a fun anecdote about the time his real drum kit fell out of the back of his truck. You can read it by clicking on the stool of the virtual drum kit.

Art as activism

SINCE THE 1979 ISLAMIC REVOLUTION in Iran, an estimated 4,000 people have been executed for the crime of lavaat, or sex between two men. One particular execution captured the attention of R. Timothy Brady, a 21-year old music composition major at Emory University, while he was studying abroad in Italy during the summer of 2005. It was the case of Mahmoud Asgari, 17, and Ayaz Marhoni, 16, who were publicly hanged in Edalat Square on July 19, 2005, after they were accused of being lovers. "I’m gay — that could happen to me," Brady says. "It doesn’t matter that they’re Iranian or they’re half way across the world, it still really hit home." A year later, when choosing a topic for his senior honors project, the boys’ story still haunted Brady, and became his inspiration for the project, "Edalat Square: Opera in One Act." Brady, a Gwinnett County native, based his opera on Asgari and Marhoni’s executions, setting the story inside the head of Asgari’s brother, Hassan, who is "imprisoned in pain and memory." The setting of the opera is abstract and barren, reflecting Hassan’s torment, Brady explains.

The Official Launch of NZ Music Month 2007

On Tuesday the 1st of May, NZ Music Month not only turns seven but is throwing one big party for New Zealand. In keeping with the nationwide nature of NZ Music Month, we’re going all the way to Christchurch and inviting everyone along to attend for free!
The city boasts a long tradition of producing NZ Music royalty from Ray Columbus, Max Merritt, and Chants R&B in the 60s to Salmonella Dub, The Feelers, and Bic Runga more recently, as well as this year’s local chart-toppers Atlas and MTV Kickstart winners The Dukes. Christchurch is also home to one of the country’s iconic music venues - the Dux de Lux, closing in on its 30th anniversary as a mainstay of the city’s music scene. There’s no better Christchurch venue at which to catch another night of great NZ Music, but who’s playing you ask?

Headlining is the mighty Fur Patrol.

Google Changing Tune on Performics?

Since Google announced its intention to acquire DoubleClick, the industry has been buzzing with speculation about what would happen to Performics, the search and affiliate marketing agency side of DoubleClick.

In a FAQ issued when it announced the news last week, Google had said, "Performics is part of DoubleClick, and we are acquiring it as part of the transaction. We have no plans to dispose of it at this time."

A check of that same FAQ today reveals a different statement on Performics:

What will Google do with Performics?
A. They have built a strong business that is valued by their clients, and we will be evaluating all strategic alternatives for this business. We are committed to continuing to meet the needs of Performics clients, and we expect no interruption in service during this transition.

'Hot Fuzz' soundtrack leaves a cold beat

Unless you are a music guru or a British pop and rock aficionado, then chances are you will not know most of the bands on the soundtrack to the upcoming film "Hot Fuzz."

The soundtrack ranges from 1990s Britpop to 1960s psychedelic rock. The album is full of a variety of songs. It is great for exposure to some old bands that most people have not heard of such as The Crazy World of Arthur Brown; although, this artist is primarily a one hit wonder.

It also features bands such as The Kinks, XTC and Adam Ant.

The album also consists of sound bites from the film, which help tell the story of the movie. But the words do not mean as much if you have not yet seen it. It seemingly intertwines the sound clips in with the music. It chronicles the film from the beginning.

Fire destroys music studio

AN AMATEUR recording studio was destroyed in a fire believed to have been caused by a discarded cigarette.

Fire crews were called to a house in Tor View, Haslingden, just before midnight on Tuesday after a smell of smoke was reported to them.

The basement had been converted into a recording studio where Jan Maguire's husband created music as a hobby.

Mr Maguire had not been home at the time but was expected to be back today.

Jan had been at home at the time of the fire and left when she could smell smoke from the basement.

She said: "It is not a professional studio, recording music is one of his hobbies.
